2003 TOUR SEASON FEATURES HISTORIC CHANGES AT MORVEN PARK
LEESBURG, VIRGINIA (March 3, 2003) Morven Park, the historic home of
Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis (1918-1922), will open for the 2003
season on Friday, April 4th, offering tours of its historic Governor's
Mansion, the Museum of Hounds and Hunting, and the Winmill Carriage
Collection.
Located north of Leesburg in Loudoun County, Virginia, the 1,200-acre
estate will offer visitors a unique opportunity to witness the
uncovering of Virginia's past as the historic landmark begins a
multi-year preservation project to the exterior of the Greek
Revival-style Governor's Mansion. Tidewater Preservation of
Fredericksburg, Virginia will spearhead the restoration effort and
special tours focusing on the mansion's architecture will be offered as
work continues.
Year 2003 also marks a milestone for Morven Park as it celebrates the
100th anniversary of Governor Davis' purchase of Morven Park and its
impact on the political, social, sporting and agricultural life in the
Commonwealth of Virginia. Several special exhibits will be featured
throughout the 2003 tourist season highlighting Morven Park as a living
symbol of the evolution of the changing Virginia landscape.
Tours of Morven Park include the Museum of Hounds and Hunting, which
displays artifacts and other memorabilia of the centuries-old sport of
foxhunting and its popularity in Virginia. The Winmill Carriage
Collection offers a marvelous display of the various and valuable
antique horse-drawn carriages from around the world that were once owned
by Mrs. Viola Townsend Winmill, who donated the collection to Morven
Park in 1967. After touring the mansion and museums, guests are
encouraged to stroll through the Marguerite Davis Memorial Boxwood
Garden or enjoy a leisurely picnic under the trees.
Morven Park is open to the public Friday through Monday through the end
of November, with special Christmas Tours in December. Tours are
offered hourly from 12:00 pm through 4:00 pm. Tickets are $7.00 for
adults, $6.00 for seniors, $1.00 for children aged six to 12, and free
for children less than six years-of-age. Special group tours and ticket
packages are also available. For more information and a special tour
