Morven Park Exhibit Highlights Virginia Governor's Turkey Farming History
LEESBURG, VIRGINIA (November 2002) In honor of Thanksgiving, visitors are
invited to “flock” to historic Morven Park in Loudoun County, Virginia
during the month of November to view the exhibit “Pride & Joy: Turkey
Farming at Morven Park.”
Westmoreland Davis, governor of Virginia from 1918-1922, practiced
progressive methods of farming and animal husbandry while living at Morven
Park. He began breeding Bronze turkeys in the early 1930s, an operation
that soon became one of the largest on the East Coast, with over 20,000
turkeys housed on the Morven Park property at one time.
To commemorate Governor Davis’ successful Bronze turkey breeding program,
Morven Park will present original items depicting the turkey operation from
the 1930s and 1940s throughout the month of November. Among the artifacts
in the exhibit are photographs, show ribbons, posters, hand-written
inventories and newspaper clippings. The exhibit will be displayed in the
Trophy Room of the Governor’s historical landmark mansion.
Tours of the mansion and museums are offered Friday through Monday on the
hour beginning at 12:00 p.m. with the last tour at 4:00 p.m. A modest
admission fee is charged. Morven Park is located off of Old Waterford Road
northwest of Leesburg, Virginia. For more information call (703) 777-6034.
Additional photographs are available upon request.
