The Curricle

Steam Pumper

The Curricle was considered the Rolls Royce of the two-Wheelers. It was believed to have originated in Italy around 1800, soon appearing in France and eventually finding its way to England.

The Curricle was always an elegant owner driven cart meant to be drawn by a pair of horses. The horses had to be closely matched, both in size and way of going. The team was tied together by means of an "I" shaped curricle bar. Although this arrangement contributed to the ride, if one horse fell, it almost certainly brought the other down with it. By the mid-1800's. the Curricle began to fall from favor.

The Curricle was never popular in the United States. It is believed there are only three in the United Stated today.
