Morven
Park Garden and Flowers
A SPRING SYMPHONY
OF FLOWERS
At Morven Park
Photos taken by Gia-Mylan Anderson
The
Boxwood Gardens at Morven Park are open during daylight hours,
when the Southern Planter Lane entrance gate is open. Grounds
close at 6pm. Public access is limited to gardens unless with
a tour guide: the area around the Mansion is restricted due
to restoration and construction work.
There is a continuous array of blooms to enjoy at Morven Park
from early spring through late summer. It only takes a few warm
days to set the garden ablaze with color. First to pop through
the ground were the hardy daffodils along the alley at the entrance.
The forsythia soon followed behind the boxwoods along the back
drive. Suddenly Bradford pear appeared along the drive in front
of the garden and the Carriage Collection. The large pink flowers
on the saucer magnolia on the mansion lawn are breathtaking. Flowering
quince frames the brick wall of the garden in white and pink.
Two cherry trees wave their delicate pink blooms as you approach
the exit gate. The bridal wreath buds are just beginning to open
along side of the old laundry house next to the mansion.
Soon the tulips will brighten the front of the mausoleum and other
scattered beds throughout the garden. When the forsythia fades
the crabapple in front of the boxwood will take over the center
of attention. The numerous dogwoods will follow their delicate
blossoms everywhere along the drive, on the hill behind the mansion
and the pathway in the boxwood garden. Rhododendron and redbud
grow wild on the wooded hill and in the fields. Persimmons are
present on the hill of the exit road.
In late spring and summer the crape myrtle will decorate the entrance
to the reflecting pool. Last but not least, the fragrance of the
beautiful white blossoms on the many southern magnolia trees will
permeate the air in the boxwood gardens. Many annuals will also
be planted to keep the colors alive throughout the rest of the
summer until the splendor of the fall leaves takes over.
