Irish Jaunting Car

Hansom Cab

The Irish Jaunting Car was the traditional two-wheeled vehicle of Ireland. The cart was developed from the earlier Trottle Car of Northern Ireland. The Jaunting Car first appeared in the streets of Dublin as a means of public transport about 1813. The passengers sat facing the sides of the road, back to back, with a hidden luggage well between them. The driver's seat was directly above the shafts, much higher than the passenger seats. Jaunting Cars were little needed for general passenger transport after the early 1930's. A few are still used as tourist attractions.

Mrs. Winmill attended the Dublin Horse Show every year and rode to and from her hotel in the Jaunting Cars. Viola enjoyed riding in them so much that she purchased two of them and had the cars shipped to her home in Warrenton, VA
