The
Landaulet or Demi-Landau
The Landaulet is the
coup version of a Landau, which first appeared in England in the
1700's. The Landaulet seated two passengers facing forward, while
the Landau seated two facing forward and two facing the rear.
The Landau was of German origin taking its name from the Bavarian
town, Landau. This four wheeled conveyance gained popularity because
it could be converted from an open carriage to a closed vehicle
with little trouble. The windows on the front and sides slid into
the frame while the leather top folded back. It was popular in
England because of the uncertain climate found there.
This carriage was
donated to the Winmill Collection by Ayrshire Farms in Upperville
