Norwegian Cariole

A cariole is a two wheeled gig with narrow bodywork, frequently unsprung or dead axle. It was used in the country districts of Norway throughout the 19th century and driven from a low rearward platform, sometimes used as a luggage grid. The cariole was drawn by a single horse or large pony.

The cariole in the Winmill Collection was purchased by Mrs. Winmill while on a cruise among the fjords of Norway. The cruise stopped every day at an interesting fishing village. Viola was attracted to the local horse carts and insisted on buying one. The cariole was sent on to the ship she would later take to New York. Mrs. Winmill continued her cruise along the Norwegian waterways. When she arrived in Bergen to sail for New York the cariole had not yet arrived. She was able to delay the departure for two hours waiting for her cariole to be delivered.
