Our elementary school lessons build a strong foundation of personal responsibility and creative problem-solving. We challenge students from kindergarten to fifth grade to be outstanding community members as they explore their world, identify problems, and make an impact.

Woodland Explorers (K-1st grade)

Time: 1.5 hours 
Location: Morven Park, in the classroom, or virtual

During the lesson students become naturalists and begin to discover why the woodland ecosystem is important and how we can help protect it. Explorers investigate the animals that live there, from the tops of trees to the ground beneath decomposing logs. Throughout the lesson students learn exciting new information about the woodland ecosystem and build a foundation for stewardship!


Pollinator Heroes: Monarch Butterflies (2nd grade)

Time: 1.5 hours
Location: Morven Park, in the classroom, or virtual

PBL: options available 

Your 2nd graders can help save the endangered monarch butterfly!  In this lesson, students investigate the life cycle, migration, and habitat needs of the monarch and consider how they can help protect this important and fascinating creature.  


Soil Stewards (3rd grade)

Time: 1 - 2 hours
Location: Morven Park, in the classroom or virtual

Virginia SOLs: Science 3.7 (a, c), Math 3.3 (a, b), Language Arts 3.1 (a-e); Social Science Skills 3 (c, h)  
PBL: option available 

After this lesson, your students will never look at dirt the same way again!  Students become scientists as they investigate soil’s unique properties, work in small groups to design and assemble healthy soil recipes, and learn how they can improve their soil at home or at school through composting. 


Tech Through Time (3rd grade)

Time: 1.5 - 2 hours  
Location: Morven Park, in the classroom, or virtual 

This lesson aligns to the following Virginia SOLs: Social Science Skills (a, c, d, i), 3.1 (j), 3.4-8 (d); Science 3.1 (a, b, c, e), Science 3.2 (d); Computer Science 3.DA.3 (a-c); English 3.1 (g, h), 3.7 (a, c, f, j)  

Blending World History, Physical Science, and Computer Science into a cross-curricular Project Based Learning (PBL) lesson, students learn about ancient cultural innovations and their connections to 20th Century machines used by the Davises at Morven Park on their farm. Students will learn how to communicate better with AI and use their skills and knowledge of machines to solve a modern community problem.  


Watershed Allies (4th grade)

 Time: 1.5 - 2 hours

This lesson aligns to the following Virginia SOLs: Science 4.1 (b, f), Science 4.3 (a, c), Science 4.8 (a), English 4.9 (a-e); Social Science Skills (a, c, e, f, h)    

Living upstream means our actions impact people living downstream. During this lesson, students will investigate the different ecosystems of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and concerns facing the watershed as a whole. Through the Meaningful Watershed Educational Experience, students will identify, analyze, and develop a solution to an issue facing their local water sources.  


Resource Roundup (5th grade)

Time: 1 hour 
Location: In the classroom or virtual 

This lesson aligns to the following Virginia SOLs: USG1. (a, b, d, f, g, h, i, j), USG.2 (a-e), USG.3 (a), USG.4 (a, b), USG.5 (a-f)  

In this U.S. Geography trade game, students collaborate to analyze and report the needs of the different geographic regions across the United States. Teams trade resources between the regions to make sure each region has enough production to thrive and ensure the economic success of the United States.
